Artist in Residency Gallery Talk
July 11 @ 7:00 pmFree
Duston Spear combines text with imagery in her paintings and works on paper. An interdisciplinary artist with works in the collections of the Metropolitan and Brooklyn Museums her short film, ‘Red Thread the prisoner and the painter’, was a collaboration with an incarcerated woman where Spear drew imagery from the prisoner’s poetry. Collaboration will be the focus of her residency and talk at the Cook Foundation. Her piece ‘ A Story About the River’ is based on a fictionalized account of the James River losing its water and the scavengers who tied single occupancy boats to their ankles as they dug for treasures and feared the river waters fast return. For her artists talk Spear will share her sketches for these boats and the story that inspired them and the small crafts she’ll construct working alongside a local boat maker. Free and open to the public.
