Join Kelly Richards for a 4 class series of beginner’s oil painting classes. Oil paints are hugely popular not only for their textures and techniques but also for their brilliant hues and color options.  Students will learn how to use tools, mix paint with other mediums, and explore different painting techniques. This series of classes is perfect for those who have always wanted to learn how to paint using oils and can serve as a refresher for those who have experience painting with oil paints.

Class One

Monday, January 23

Students will discuss color theory and learn how to mix colors. They will also learn about the element of value and how to create tints and shades. Students will demonstrate their understanding by creating a color wheel and a gradient scale.

Class Two

Monday, January 30

Students will create color gradient backgrounds during this class using their knowledge about mixing colors and creating tints and shades. Kelly will teach students how to create a smooth, blended look from one color/shade to the next. Students will be given the creative freedom to choose which colors they use.

Class Three

Monday, February 6

During class three, students will create basic still life paintings. Students will study light and shadows and create optical blending by adding highlights and shadows to their paintings.

Class Four

Monday, February 13

In the final class of the series, students will add a foreground to the color gradient backgrounds created during the second class. While using color theory and value, students will add details to the objects they choose to paint in the foreground of their paintings.

Students will be required to purchase basic supplies for the class. A supply list will be given to students upon registration. Students must register for all 4 classes in order to attend.
