About the Instructor

Janet is a retired Art Specialist from Gloucester County Public Schools. She taught in Hampton City Schools and, locally, at Petworth Elementary for 25 years prior to retiring from teaching, in 2016. She certainly enjoyed teaching art to young children and has always been amazed at how children can teach her!  Janet graduated Magna cum laude from Old Dominion University.
Janet’s own artistic work is tapestry weaving, balanced between the 60” Macomber and 30” Leclerc looms. Her favorite weaving is Theo Moorman’s tapestry technique. Janet lives in Gloucester Courthouse with her husband, Jim, and two crazy cats.

Quilts of River Country

Quilts of River Country

The art of quilting has expanded through the years. From the days of scissors, cotton fabric and hand needles to today’s rotary cutters, acrylic rulers, sewing machines, fusible batting and embellishments, quilting is an exciting art form.

The quilters of the Middle Peninsula are at the forefront of a new style of quilting fusing the old and the new. In this show you’ll see the beauty and precision of of traditional quilting artfully blended with the new techniques and patterns that keep the craft of quilting relevant to today.

Saint Julien’s Creek Revival

Formed in 2016 out of “NorFOLK, VA”, the musicians of Saint Juliens Creek Revival were brought together through the local bluegrass picking circles.  Recognizing a mutual love of roots music and three-part harmony, they soon branched off to explore their own sound, and Saint Juliens Creek Revival was born.  The band’s mission is to engage the community in roots music by bringing an eclectic a mixture of folk, Americana, bluegrass, gospel, and original tunes to its audiences.  The varied backgrounds of its members provide a unique combination of musical styles that is both contemporary and steeped in tradition, with influences ranging from 19th Century parlor tunes to Western Swing to Rock & Roll.  Saint Juliens Creek Revival is making plans to record their first demo soon.

“Between Layers,” featuring artwork by grandmother and granddaughter duo, Rose Nygaard & Aprille Zammit, will be on display at Arts on Main until April 1st.

For this collaboration, Aprille travelled from her studio in Malta, Europe, to Gloucester, Virginia in 2022 to spend three weeks creating work together with Rose. “Between Layers” is a body of work in which the two artists played off each other’s different styles and backgrounds of working. Rose begins with colour, and Aprille begins with composition. Both artists layer the two to make their work. Rose and Aprille hope the work will ignite joy and lightness in the viewer.
